After massive repair and renovation work, the ship returned to service in 1944, and was assigned to the Pacific fleet. In the summer of 1945, Arizona participated in the Invasion of Okinawa. As the last surviving battleship of the Navy, Arizona was used in the last days of the war to bombard Japan's mainland cities with 14-inch (356 mm) shells. The ship was then taken out of service and scuttled at the end of the war. On 2 November 1945, the last of Arizona's crew was rescued by the submarine. After the war, the battleship was towed to Pearl Harbor, where it was sunk by gunfire on 27 November 1945. A United States naval vessel was sunk nearby on 30 November. The sunken battleship lies at the bottom of Pearl Harbor, a popular scuba diving site. The Arizona Memorial Association was established in 1948 to save the ship. In 1947, the remains of the battleship were covered by of sand to protect them from vandals, and the site was opened to the public. On 6 June 1958, a fire broke out in the ship's turret, destroying much of the ship. Worked to restore and preserve the ship finally began in 1984.
The site of the sunken battleship, now named the USS Arizona Memorial, is the largest memorial to a shipwreck in the world. On 3 December 1941, the struck the battleship, sinking it with a loss of 1,177 of its crew. The radio carrier was then torpedoed and sunk two days later by the in the same action. Many of the carrier's crew survived; others were killed when the Soryu exploded.
The first ship of the Arizona class to see active service was Arizona (BB-40). She was commissioned in December 1926. The end of the 1930s saw a series of naval treaties that brought about America's withdrawal from world power politics. This left the Arizona-class ships as marginal combatants. Both Arizona and West Virginia were converted to guided-missile destroyers in the mid-1940s, but only West Virginia ever saw combat. She was sunk by a Japanese torpedo during the attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941.
After the Japanese attack, the ship's complement was reduced to about 1,200. Her secondary batteries were transferred to the battleship USS West Virginia, and her guns were removed. She was assigned to service as a depot ship and was reduced to a training ship for cadets at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Though not actively engaged in combat, she was awarded three battle stars for her service in World War II.
Some applications, such as Java, require that the application directories and libraries are updated to a newer version before the user can update. However, there are some applications that are not explicitly API-specific, such as the X Window System, the X server source code, are automatically updated as required.
