I have recently bought a 2015 iMac for my studio and as it doesn't have firewire I had to get the thunderbolt/firewire adaptor to rum from my RME Fireface 400. Since setting it up Logic Pro X does not recognise the RME, do i need a driver or something to get it working Please help, music has been put on hold until i can get this sorted.
The Thunderbolt ports in the current Mac Studio, 24-inch iMac, Mac mini, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air work with USB-C devices, which have the same connector shape. If you want to use a USB-C device, you can just plug it into one of the Thunderbolt ports. No adapter is necessary.
Anker makes a USB-C to Lightning adapter for $33/27 on Amazon. This adapter has a female Lightning connector on one end, so you can plug in your Lightning earphones. The other side is a standard USB-C connector that you plug into your Mac.
To connect to a DisplayPort display, you need a USB-C to DisplayPort cable or adapter. Amazon sells the Cable Matters USB-C to DisplayPort Adapter cable for $19 (18 on Amazon UK), and it supports 4K video at 60Hz.
If you use a DLSR or other type of stand-alone camera, it might have a way to transfer your files wirelessly. If not, you need an adapter to access the SD card, like the SanDisk Extreme PRO SD UHS-II USB-C Card Reader ($21 on Amazon or 21 on Amazon UK).
Connecting Firewire Devices such as audio interfaces to USB C or Thunderbolt 3 port needs you to use two types of adapters together, 1st Firewire 800 adapter Thunderbolt 1/2 adapter, and 2nd Thunderbolt 1/2 or USB C to Thunderbolt 3 adapter. If you have a device that only supports firewire 400 then you also need Firewire 400 to 800 adapter. You can join them to convert audio signals from Firewire to USB C.
Well, solutions are there. You can easily connect your Firewire audio device to the latest iMac with the help of certain adapters.BUT, not all Firewire to USB-C adapters is compatible with the new iMac. So in this guide, you will learn how to connect firewire to USB C in audio devices.Tip: If you want to know more about USB-C you can refer to PCmags article on USB-C
However, Thunderbolt USB-C ports are much faster than Firewire ports you should not expect the speed you get with the thunderbolt device.BUT, when you are struggling in connecting your old Firewire devices with thunderbolt-only computers, such as iMac, Mac Pro, and other Mac-based devices then this technique works great.
Thunderbolt 3 is the latest version of the thunderbolt, exclusively used in Apple devices.Where thunderbolt 1 and 2 required an external power source to operate in active mode, thunderbolt 3 can operate in both active and passive mode.In passive mode, thunderbolt 3 provides a top speed of 20Gbp, while the active thunderbolt 3 cables provide 40Gbps speed.
Most USB-C devices can be used with a Thunderbolt 3 cable so you can use USB-C audio interfaces like Motu M-4 with any device that has a thunderbolt-3 connection. But, Thunderbolt 3 devices can not be used with USB-C ports as they use discrete Thunderbolt chips to function. As thunderbolt 3 and thunderbolt 4 are exclusive products of Apple so you will not find Thunderbolt ports in Windows devices. But, you can use thunderbolt cables with USB C ports.
It depends on the data transfer load. If you transfer data more than the capacity of Firewire capacity then the quality will lose. BElow the data threshold, there is no quality loss. What is the price of Firewire to Thunderbolt 2 USB-C connectorFirewire to thunderbolt 2 adaptors are sold by Apple. This costs anywhere between $25 to $100.How do I connect FireWire 400 to ThunderboltI have already shown above how to connect FireWire 400 to Thunderbolt. How can I use the legacy firewire audio interface devices on a USB-C portYou can use legacy firewire audio interface devices on a USB-C port through FireWire to USB-C connectors.ConclusionAudio recording technology is continuously evolving over time. Decades back, the system was in the analog domain.
That could be a problem. M1 macs need drivers designed specifically for M1, and unless MOTU has ported the M1 drivers specifically over to M1 *AND* apple has ported firewire-over-thunderbolt , you might be out of luck.Welcome to the world of planned obscelessance. And its a damn shame, I have some really nice firewire gear too.
Firewire to USB C Converters work well with all firewire devices, but I suggest you to first checkout the details of that firewire-USB C adaptor on Amazon along with the customer reviews, their official websites, review websites and forums before buying.
Hi,I tried your setup using Thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3 USB-C + Thunderbolt 2 to Firewire 800 + F800 to F400 cables with my Dell G3 3500 laptop running under windows 11. I want to be able to use my Echo Audiofire 12 Audio interface on it.It happens to behave not correctly. When i try to read a wav file on bandcamp or Ableton. I get a glitch sound for 1 second then nothing anymore.I can see Ieee 1394 Controller (coming from Thunderbolt 2 to Firewire 800 cable) and the correct Echo Audiofire 12 peripheral under configuration panel. But things goes wrong somewhere. Does anybody experimented same issue or have any idea of what i could miss or did wrong
this is great! I have an old M-AUDIO sound device that has 6-pin Firewire. But my mac does not have USB-C. I only have the USB-B. I can not find an adapter that would seem to work. The ones on Amazon have bad reviews that say they will fry your USB port.
I would like to connect my old video camera to my new laptop XPS15. The laptop is equipped with a USB type-C thunderbolt port to which is possible to connect a DELL adapter to ethernet/hdmi etc. Unfortunately a firewire port is not available on this adapter. Does a similar adapter exist for firewire devices Where I can find it
I have never purchased an Apple product and was hurt to have to buy the Apple adapter. I was even more hurt by the pricetag of the Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) that is apprently only sold by one company.
Hi Terry, old post I know but I just came across it while looking for this adapter. My question is, does it work the other way around I just ordered a new TB drive and have a previous gen macbook with FW800. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks
We use cameras attached to computers to collect images using downloaded software. The cameras have a IEEE 1394b 9pin Firewire port on the back, but we've been able to use a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter and a Thunderbolt 2 to Firewire adapter to connect the camera to a Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt enabled USB-C port on computers. We used the setup 4/1/2022 to take images and have not used it since 4/27/2022, which is when we noticed the issue. When the device is plugged in, we get the message \"Thunderbolt device functionality might be limited\". I tried following older threads to get the legacy drivers reinstalled, but the issue has impacted all of our computers/laptops that used to function, and installing the firewire drivers, thunderbolt controllers, and resetting the start value in regedit has not helped. In device manager, I can see the Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter, but the IEEE 1394 bus does not open. If anyone can help try to get the connection back, please let me know.
I have the Startech one working on a Dell XPS15 with Windows 10. When plugging in the TB2 FireWire adapter from Apple and audio playing there is a > 20% CPU load on one core during audio transmission. Process Monitor says it is the interrupts causing high DPCs. Audio is ok, no crackles, but the load is not encouraging to go this route. Maybe this will improve with the next Bios/Thunderbolt/driver update from Intel's or MS side, don't know.
But, at the TB3 to TB2 Adapter product page there is this * sign which says the adapter only works with macOS Sierra But Im on Win7.+ the new adapter is available at the earliest at 8th of November.Maybe there will be a Thunderbolt 3 to Firewire Adapter
This new adapter needs to be tried. It is said to only work with macOS Sierra, but Apple's claims for compatibility had been wrong before too. Maybe it works. Maybe it is a second generation version that even works better, and with everything USB-C - we'll see.
Regarding the crash with TB to FireWire adapter: it turned out that this only happens with an additional TB bridge between the Startech and the adapter. I use an LG 38\" Widescreen with two TB ports, sending the graphics data over TB, then using the monitor's second port to connect the UFX+ via TB. That works. The FW adapter in there crashes Windows sometimes already after three seconds.
Of course this is the reason that the adapter doesn't work (Windows even issues a USB warning message although only TB is connected). But there is a difference: the new MacBook will never work with all existing USB-C to TB adapters except the Apple one. But 'older' USB-C equipped hardware like my Dell XPS15 could work with the Apple adapter. IMHO all it needs is a new firmware/TB driver from Intel to recognize the new adapter correctly. If that will ever happen - don't know...
I just checked the new Apple adapter with the latest Intel Thunderbolt driver update which adds support for the 'new' TI USB chip. No change, the Apple USB-C to TB adapter can not be used with the Dell XPS 15, and most probably this is true for all 'PCs'. 781b155fdc
